Drama & Passion
Tchaikovsky’s Pathetique symphony portrays the full range of human emotions from hope through happiness to despair. Written just before he died, the true meaning of this most dramatic of symphonies remains an enigma. Italian composer Antonio Salieri was a teacher of many famous composers including Beethoven and Mozart and came to fame in Peter Schaffer’s play and film Amadeus. Although mainly a composer of opera, he also wrote this attractive concerto for flute and oboe, performed by Lauren Gorman and Brienne Gawler. The concert opens with a typically dramatic overture to Verdi’s opera Nabucco.
